Tentec Offers a Certified Refurbishment Service for All Makes of Tensioners and Torque Wrenches

Ever-mindful of the often harsh conditions in which bolt tensioners and torque wrenches are used, bolt tightening specialists, Tentec, offer a unique refurbishment and repair service where any make of tools can be returned to Tentec’s HQ in the West Midlands and returned as good as new, within a specified time period.

As manufacturers of hydraulic bolt tensioning tools for over 20 years, Tentec is aware that after prolonged use in harsh environments, the tools are susceptible to component corrosion. This can significantly reduce the working life of the tool and the reduction in reliability is one the key attributing factors to hydraulic leaks. As well as problems with corrosion, over time some of the moving parts or seal sets may also need replacing for optimum use.

Tentec offers a consistent, dependable and prompt service for both maintenance and repair that gives users complete confidence that their tools are in the best possible condition for the job at hand.

The service is carried out by Tentec’s highly experienced team of technicians and involves a complete strip down and clean; thorough examination for damage; cleaning; surface coating; re-sealing and a fully traceable pressure test complete with a ‘Certificate of Pressure Test’. The refurbished tools will then be packaged and returned.

Bolt tightening equipment is used throughout the oil & gas, powergen, mining, renewables and industrial markets where reliable and consistent bolt tightening is a vital part of any safety procedure. It is very important that the tools are ‘fit for purpose’ and this service significantly prolongs the working life of the equipment, saving companies the added costs of purchasing new equipment.

As well as torque tensioning tools and wrenches, Tentec’s service has been expanded to include hydraulic nuts and tensioner pumps.

All pumps purchased from Tentec are supplied with a certificate of calibration that is valid for 12 months from the date of dispatch. When the certificate expires the pressure gauge requires re-calibration and certification as per ISO 9001 calibration requirements. Tentec provides a calibration service that is traceable to national standards.

More details are available on Tentec’s website and a brochure outlining the service can be downloaded from the Tentec web site.

Tentec has Fulfilled a Repeat Order for the World’s Largest Hydraulic Nuts

In 2011, bolt tightening specialists, Tentec Ltd received and delivered an order for what was believed to be the largest hydraulic nuts ever manufactured. The contract, to supply 4 massive hydraulic nuts for a major forging press refurbishment project in the USA, was completed and delivered on time and on budget. The quality of the work carried out by Tentec’s innovative in-house design and production team in its advanced UK manufacturing facility has resulted in a repeat order for the same company. The hydraulic nuts required for the forging press had 25” Buttress thread forms and each hydraulic nut weighed 4 tonnes with an 8000 tonne bolt load capacity.

Hydraulic nuts are a permanent form of bolt tensioning where the hydraulic nut replaces the conventional hexagon or round nut. With application of hydraulic pressure to the hydraulic nuts, bolt load is generated effortlessly and the user needs only to insert easily fitted shims to retain the bolt load. The hydraulic pressure is then released and an accurate bolt load is retained.

“We are delighted to have received a repeat order for these hydraulic nuts.” says Paul Egginton, Engineering Director at Tentec. “The original order was a real challenge but our whole team pulled together and delivered the products to the exacting specifications.”

Tentec Celebrates 25 Years of Innovation as Sales Continue to Grow

West Bromwich, UK. September 24, 2013: Tentec Ltd, renowned throughout the world for providing bolt tightening solutions is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.

Founded in 1988 by current Managing Director and CEO Mike Gethings and Adrian Pegler respectively, Tentec has grown from a small company providing hydraulic bolts to the coal mining industry to a multi-million pound global organisation that supplies innovative bolt tightening solutions to a wide range of industries including petrochemical, renewable energy, offshore and nuclear.

“The last 25 years have been an exciting and interesting journey.” explains Mike. “When Adrian and I began there were 240 deep coal mines here in the UK, so we were kept very busy in that industry for our first few years. By the early 1990s the mines began to close, we had started exporting our products and realised that we needed to diversify the business, certainly in the UK.”

Due to the success of the company in the early years and increasing exports, by 1992 Tentec was in the position to expand and start the diversification process, although bolt tensioning would remain at the core of its business. Tentec began designing and manufacturing bolt tensioners for the oil and gas industry and from 1992–1999 saw its products used in a number of different industries including petrochem, steel and power generation. In 1994 it entered the subsea market with the introduction of a unique range of multi-stud tensioners (MSTs).

The next milestone in Tentec’s history was 2000 when the company moved into its purpose-built premises in West Bromwich, UK. This enabled further development as stocks could be kept, so guaranteeing fast delivery – an area where many similar companies could not compete. Tentec’s design team also grew meaning as well as standard equipment, Tentec could also provide customised tools, manufactured exactly to customers’ requirements. In 2008 Tentec launched a new range of products for the wind energy market and soon became one of the leading names within the industry.
Tentec continues to innovate and over the last few years the company has added a range of torque wrenches to its product portfolio and new bolt tensioners have been launched for the offshore and subsea markets. The latest innovation has been the new V-Series of Compact Flange bolt tensioners. These new products are being launched at the Offshore Europe exhibition in September and represents another major step forward for the offshore, onshore and subsea installation and maintenance industries.

As Tentec celebrates its 25th year of business, the company now has 40 distributors worldwide and a team of over 60 personnel at its HQ in the UK. With a commitment to HSEQ and product innovation, Tentec has ambitious plans for the coming years. Bucking an industry trend that sees more Chinese goods imported to the UK than exported, with the appointment of a new distributor in China in 2012, Tentec now sees the Chinese market as one of its most important export markets.

“We want to continue providing the best possible bolt tightening products and accessories.” says Mike. “We are committed to providing our customers with high-quality tools and customer satisfaction is our prime objective. We would also like to thank all our customers throughout the world for supporting us and promise that we will continue to provide all industries with the equipment that they need to carry out their operations safely and efficiently.”

Tentec Launches New Generation of Topside Bolt Tensioners for Compact Flanges

Tentec Ltd, a leading global designer and manufacturer of bolt tensioning equipment is pleased to announce the launch of the new V-Series of Compact Flange bolt tensioners on Stand 1B61 at Offshore Europe 2013. The V-Series is a purpose designed range of tools designed specifically for use on SPO Compact flanges and the Norsok L-005 compact flanges. The range consists of 11 bolt tensioning tools covering bolt sizes from 3/4” to 4”.

Since its introduction in 1989, the SPO Compact Flange from Vector International has been used internationally by installation and maintenance engineers offshore, onshore and subsea and is widely believed to be the most effective, environmentally friendly piping joint available. However, although the preferred method of tightening the SPO compact flange bolts is by using bolt tensioning tools, due to the small size and relatively high bolt load requirements of the flanges, most conventional bolt tensioners either do not fit or do not have a high enough bolt load capacity. So, once again, Tentec answers the needs of the oil and gas industry with the launch of the V-Series Compact Flange Tensioners.

During the challenging development of the V-Series, Tentec design engineers modelled over 300 different configurations of SPO compact flanges using the latest 3D solid model CAD software. The result was that the tensioners fit perfectly onto the SPO flanges as they have been designed to clear not only the elliptical profile of the flanges, but also the weld protrusion and the pipe diameter. The design team has also ensured that the profile machined tensioners would stay clear of any adjacent hexagon nut, so smooth operation is guaranteed. The bolt load specified by Vector International is exactly met by the new V-Series, so guaranteeing a leak free bolted joint.

Reliability is further enhanced by the fact that Tentec has designed the tools without using bonded seals. Bonded seals are used by most bolt tensioning manufacturers to seal the hydraulic connections to the tensioner. These tiny seals are prone to failure and when just one of the many bonded seals used in a tensioning system fail, the whole tensioning procedure comes to a halt until the failed tiny seal is replaced. Tentec has designed out the use of these fragile seals so that this new range of tensioners no longer rely on bonded seals, improving safety and minimising downtime.

To make life easier for all users of the V-Series tensioners, Tentec’s popular Bolt Tightening Software (BTS) has been updated to include all Vector International standard compact flanges along with the correct recommended tensioning pressures. Using BTS takes away the complexity of calculating tensioner pressures and torque values, making it quick, easy and a foolproof way to avoid human error.

The new V-Series complements Tentec’s existing ranges of bolt tensioners that includes the recently introduced Compact-8 series of subsea bolt tensioners that is ideal for use on subsea Vector/SPO compact flanges.

Tentec Training Celebrates Its First Anniversary As Accolades Flood In

As Tentec Training, an ECITB Approved Provider of training and competence assurance programmes in the assembly and tightening of bolted connections, celebrates its first anniversary, attendees at its training courses have been praising both the content of the courses and the format of the days’ training.

A unique aspect of Tentec’s approach to training is that not only are the trainees taught academic and practical skills, but the course also prepares them for working away from home for long periods of time and how to handle the extreme circumstances they may find themselves in. Feedback from attendees praised Glenn Dixon, Tentec’s trainer, commenting how refreshing it was to have training from someone who had extensive experience in the industry, especially offshore. Other aspects of the courses that gained praise were the fact that the courses were interactive and there was plenty of time and opportunity to ask questions.

As well as training company individuals, Tentec has seen a rise in the number of self sponsored attendees who are looking to enhance their careers and improve their job prospects. Steve Hardman is typical of this new group of individuals and after attending Tentec’s course says: “I just wanted to say thank you very much for tolerating my barrage of questions over the past three days and for going out of your way to teach us everything you possibly could about bolt torquing, tensioning and the affiliated. Couldn’t have asked for a better tutor.”

Information on the training and competence assurance programmes offered by Tentec Training is now available either as a full-colour printed brochure, or downloadable from the website at http://www.tentec.net/training.php
